A Profile of David Fedson


DAVID S. FEDSON, M.D.
Dr. David Fedson received his degree from Yale University in 1965. After spending 30 years as a clinician and researcher in the Universities of Chicago and Virginia, he joined the Medical Department of Aventis Pasteur MSD, a European vaccine company located in Lyon, France. Dr Fedson is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

Since the mid-1970s Dr. Fedson's research has focused on adult immunisation with influenza and pneumococcal vaccines. During this time he has published more than 100 scientific articles, chapters, and abstracts on the subject. In 1999 Dr Fedson received the Research Achievement Award in Adult Immunisation in the United States given by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the Health Care Financing Administration and the Coalition on Adult Immunisation.

Dr. Fedson was active in public service for adult immunisation for over a decade. From 1982 to 1990 he served on the Committee and later Task Force on Adult Immunisation of the American College of Physicians. He chaired the Task Force from 1988 to 1990 and edited the second edition of the ACP's Guide for Adult Immunisation. He was a member of the U.S. Public Health Service's Immunisation Practices Advisory Committee (ACIP) from 1984 to 1988, served as ACP Liaison Representative to the ACIP from 1988 to 1990, and was a member of the Vaccine Advisory Committee (NVAC) from 1990 to 1994. He chaired the NVAC Subcommittee on Adult Immunisation and authored the Subcommittee's report that was submitted to the Assistant Secretary of Health in 1994. He has spoken frequently on adult immunisation at academic medical centres, conferences, and symposia in the United States and in many other countries in Western Europe, Latin America and East Asia.
