Contents notes Dr Daphne Holt

This lecture has been prepared by Professor Keith Cartwright, honorary Medical Director of the Meningitis Trust. The thrust of the lecture, delivered in 33 slides, is although meningococcal caused by Neiserria meningitides serogroup C (Men C) is declining in the United Kingdom due to the introduction of a conjugate vaccine, disease caused by group B (Men B) remains a challenge.

Slides 2-5 describe the introduction of the Meningococcus group C conjugate vaccines (MCC) into the UK in 1999, why it was needed, and the vaccine status at the end of 2000.

Professor Cartwright goes on to describe the status of meningococcal disease in the UK, looking at changes in incidence due to different organisms and at the decrease in mortality.
